Dr. Bernd L. Fiebich is Head of the Research Group Neuroimmunology and Neurochemistry at the Laboratory of Translational Psychiatry, Department of Psychiatry and Psychotherapy, University Hospital Freiburg.

He studied Biology at the Albert-Ludwigs-University in Freiburg, specializing in genetics, developmental biology, and cell biology. His diploma work focused on paternal mutants of Caenorhabditis elegans, followed by his Ph.D. at the Department of Molecular Cell Biology, Gödecke/Parke-Davies AG, where he investigated the expression of PKC isoforms and VEGF in baculovirus-infected cells.

Since 1996, Dr. Fiebich has led the Neurochemistry Research Group at University Hospital Freiburg. His research centers on neuroinflammation in psychiatric and neurodegenerative diseases, with expertise spanning molecular, biochemical, and cellular neurobiology. He has made significant contributions in the study of microglia, CNS signaling pathways, the arachidonic acid cascade, neurotoxins, and natural products.

A pioneer in the exploration of phytomedicines, Dr. Fiebich has established cellular models of pain and inflammation and guided numerous projects on drug and extract development, particularly focusing on the analgesic and anti-inflammatory effects of natural products such as Harpagophytum. His broader research interests also include G-protein coupled receptors, microRNAs, neuropeptides, environmental toxins, purinoreceptors, and nutrition in healthy aging.

Dr. Fiebich is a member of several leading scientific organizations, including the Neurowissenschaftliche Gesellschaft, Immunologische Gesellschaft (Arbeitskreis Neuroimmunoendocrinologie), GEBIN, the Neuroinflammation Working Group (USA), and the International Society of Neurochemistry (ISN).

With more than 170 peer-reviewed publications and an h-index of 53, he is internationally recognized as a leading scientist in neuroinflammation, immunology, and inflammatory diseases.
