Every one of us knows the feeling of anxiety. It is a completely normal reaction to a situation that warns us of the dangers of everyday life and that threatens our sense of security. This unpleasant feeling normally disappears by itself as soon as the external threat is no longer present.

How does anxiety arise?

Threat,stress and uncertainty cause the body to produce more glutamate and you feel the sensation of fear and anxiety throughout your body. The more glutamate, the stronger the feeling of fear and anxiety, in the worst case up to panic attacks. 

GABA is the antagonist of glutamate. Its job is to displace glutamate and inhibit its action so that the feeling of calm and serenity can be restored. Only when GABA and glutamate are in balance do we feel calm and balanced. 

What do the individual vital substances in Serenity do?

1. GABA

Our body produces large amounts of the messenger substance glutamate when we are threatened, stressed or uncertain, which triggers feelings of anxiety and restlessness. GABA is an antagonist of glutamate and has a calming effect on the mind and body. 

A persistent GABA deficiency with a simultaneous excess of glutamate can lead to many symptoms, such as anxiety, restlessness, stress, mood swings, sleep disorders, listlessness, muscle tension, digestive problems such as constipation. 

Through the supply of GABA, the negative effect of glutamate is balanced and the body regains its equilibrium.  

A 2011 study published in the Journal of Clinical Psychology Review showed that the use of GABA supplements can reduce anxiety symptoms in people with anxiety disorders. Study authors concluded that GABA supplements may be a safe and effective way to counteract and prevent anxiety symptoms. [1] 

2. Lemon Balm Extract

The natural extract from lemon balm leaves has been shown in studies to have a calming and anti-anxiety effect. Its effect is due to the fact that the rosmarinic acid contained in lemon balm inhibits GABA transaminase, an enzyme that breaks down GABA, increasing GABA levels in the brain. 

The lemon balm extract contained in Serenity is produced using a special extraction process that preserves all of the plant's ingredients. It is standardised to contain 2.5% rosmarinic acid, which guarantees its effectiveness.

Lemon balm extract was tested in a study [2] 

In a clinical trial involving 20 people aged 18 to 70, the stress-reducing effects of lemon balm extract were demonstrated. The participants, who suffered from anxiety symptoms and sleep problems, were given 300 mg of lemon balm extract twice a day for 15 days. None of the participants had any side effects. 

After 2 weeks, the results were as follows: 

• Reduction of anxiety symptoms by 18%
• Reduction of stress symptoms by 15%. 
• Reduction of sleep problems by 42%.

The effect of lemon balm extract in eliminating sleep disorders and restlessness has also been recognised by the European Commission ESCOP (European Scientific Cooperative on Phytotherapy).

3. Californian poppy

California poppy (Eschscholtzia californica) is one of the classics among the calming and sleep-promoting herbal agents. Especially in combination with valerian, an improvement in sleep duration and sleep efficiency has been scientifically proven. [3]

In a systematic review and meta-analysis, 32 studies were analysed to clarify the potential of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) for the treatment of generalised anxiety disorder. The authors concluded that a combination of hawthorn, California poppy and magnesium were superior to a placebo. [4] 

4. Green tea

Green tea contains the amino acid L-theanine, catchins and specifically epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG). Green tea extract helps maintain healthy cholesterol levels and cardiovascular system. It helps you feel more energetic and supports your body and mind. 

The amino acid L-theanine stimulates alpha waves in the brain and is also involved in the formation of the neurotransmitter gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA). Thus, L-theanine relaxes the mind, at the same time makes one concentrated and attentive, and promotes mental health. 

A randomised, controlled, double-blind study investigated the extent to which green tea can improve mood swings. The results showed that in 81 healthy adults, consumption of green tea with a ratio of caffeine epigallocatechin gallate to theanine + arginine of 3.9 and 4.7 reduced susceptibility to mood swings.

5. Hawthorn extract

Hawthorn, a tall shrub of the rose family, grows in open meadows, along roadsides, along streams and on forest edges at low to medium altitudes. While the flowers are particularly appreciated in spring, the leaves and berries are harvested in autumn.  

The berries, leaves and flowers contain large amounts of flavonoid glycosides. Hawthorn is valued for helping with the physical and emotional effects of stress and insomnia.

6. Camomile extract

Chamomile belongs to the daisy family and is related to other well-known wild herbs such as dandelion, marigold or mugwort. According to a study by the University of Pennsylvania, chamomile not only has a mood-lifting effect, but also helps to lower stress levels and can make it easier to fall asleep. The team of researchers who examined the randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled study concluded that chamomile can have clinically significant mood-lifting effects in addition to its previously observed anxiety-relieving effects. 7. Magnesium

Magnesium is usually only associated with calf cramps. However, a magnesium deficiency can also lead to restlessness, poor concentration and memory, anxiety, irritability and sleep disturbances, and can promote the development of mental imbalance. 

It has been shown that frequent stress (such as noise stress) can lead to increased magnesium loss, which in turn leads to increased susceptibility to stress. [7] Prolonged stress can therefore deplete the body's magnesium reserves and promote the development of anxiety.

8. Niacinamide

Niacinamide is also involved in the production of neurotransmitters, including serotonin, which elevates mood. Vitamin B6

Serenity contains pyridoxal-5-phosphate (P-5-P), the activated form of vitamin B6. Only in this active form can vitamin B6 be transported in the blood and work together with other vital substances. 

By taking active pyridoxal-5-phosphate, it is not necessary for the body to activate the various forms of vitamin B6, such as pyridoxal, pyridoxine and pyridoxamine, itself in order to produce pyridoxal-5-phosphate. Thus, pyridoxal-5-phosphate is immediately available and acts more quickly. 

Problems with the conversion of conventional vitamin B6 can be ruled out by taking activated pyridoxal-5-phosphate. This activation process can be limited, for example, due to a nutrient deficiency or enzyme defect, or in older people. 

As a coenzyme, vitamin B6 is involved in about 100 enzymatic metabolic processes. Among other things, vitamin B6 plays a crucial role in protein and energy metabolism, contributes to the normal function of the nervous system, is involved in the production of the happiness hormone serotonin, ensures the formation of red blood pigment and helps keep homocysteine in check and supports mental health.

Zinc

As an essential trace element, zinc is involved in hundreds of enzymatic reactions in the body. These include processes that affect the brain and nervous system, as well as the transmission of stimuli between nerve cells. 

Zinc is also involved in the conversion of vitamin B6 into its active form
pyridoxal-5-phosphate, which is important for the formation of GABA. Therefore, zinc deficiency can lead to low GABA levels in the brain. 

A study at the Research Institute in Illinois has also shown that people with anxiety generally have too little zinc and at the same time too much copper in their blood. Both trace elements are important for the production of
neurotransmitters and are absorbed via the same receptors. For an optimal
neurotransmitter, however, it is important that zinc dominates. Too much copper in the brain increases the production of the stimulating neurotransmitters epinephrine and norepinephrine and blocks the transmission of GABA, the calming neurotransmitter.

The passion flower (Passiflora incarnata) is a traditional medicinal plant divided into more than 500 different species. The best-known variety is the one that bears edible fruit. Extracts of passionflower are often used in herbal blends to promote calming and restful sleep. 

Who is Serenity suitable for?

Serenity is suitable for adults and adolescents. The dosage should be adjusted according to age, body weight and need. Anyone suffering from severe anxiety disorders or taking prescription substances that affect the psyche in any way should only take Serenity in consultation with their doctor. 

Does Serenity have any side effects or interactions?
