Vitamin A is essential for our eyesight and for recognizing colors. The retina contains millions of photoreceptors, where the visual pigment rhodopsin is formed from vitamin A and protein.

When light strikes these photoreceptors, they transmit nerve impulses to the brain, forming visual images. This remarkable process we call vision requires a substantial amount of vitamin A.

Especially if you spend long hours on the computer or in front of the television, your eyes adjust to light and dark stimuli up to 10,000 times a day. To manage this, your eyes require sufficient vitamin A or its precursor, beta-carotene, to maintain sharp vision.

• Lutein and zeaxanthin, as carotenoids, are also antioxidants and, as such, help protect cells from oxidative stress. [3]
