Chewable omega-3 capsules for children: UltraPure Omega 3 Kids

The chewable capsules are made for children aged 4 and over. For smaller children between 1 and 4 years of age, we recommend piercing the liquid contents of a capsule with a needle and mixing it into food or drink. The whole capsule should not be given to small children due to the risk of choking.

The recommended daily dose is 1 to 3 chewable capsules, taken with a meal. Water is not needed for this; the capsules can simply be chewed.

UltraPure Omega3 Kids is intended for children from about 4 to 12 years of age – so a 10-year-old child is exactly within the intended range. 

Experience shows that younger children sometimes have problems with the pure fish oil taste of the adult capsules. 

As soon as your child can swallow capsules without any problems and the fruity chewy flavour is no longer necessary, it is possible to switch to the adult formula.

It's true that fish oil doesn't have a pleasant taste by itself. That's why we've added a natural tutti-frutti flavour to UltraPure Omega3 Kids, both in the oil and in the capsule shell. When you bite into it, the oil bursts out – for many children, it feels more like a chewy sweet than a classic capsule.

No. UltraPure Omega3 Kids contains fish oil and the capsule shell is made of fish gelatine, so the product is not suitable for children with a fish allergy. In this case, Vitality Nutritionals offers purely plant-based omega-3 alternatives (e.g., based on algae oil).

In addition to fish oil with DHA and EPA, the capsules also contain vitamin D and vitamin E. Vitamin D contributes to the normal functioning of the immune system and supports the normal absorption of calcium for bones and teeth. Vitamin E helps protect cells from oxidative stress.

No. The capsule shell contains gelatin from fish, and the core is made of fish oil. For families looking for a plant-based alternative, Vitality Nutritionals offers separate, purely plant-based omega-3 products.

In principle, Omega3 Kids can be easily combined with other dietary supplements. Since vitamins D and E are already included, it is worth taking a look at the total amount if your child is also taking a multivitamin supplement, so that the daily amounts are not covered twice. If in doubt, a paediatrician is best placed to provide information on individual coordination.

Nothing dramatic. Dietary supplements like Omega3 work through regular daily intake, not through a single dose. Just continue as normal the next day without making up for the forgotten capsule.

Children should always take dietary supplements under supervision, and the container should be kept out of the reach of young children. If your child has taken significantly more than the recommended amount, contact your paediatrician or the Poison Control Centre as a precaution.

The EFSA gives a guideline of around 250 mg of EPA and DHA combined per day for children aged 2 years and over; the DGE follows this estimate and also recommends 1 to 2 fish meals per week to meet the requirement through diet. 

In practice, many children do not achieve this amount: according to the DGE nutrition report, the actual intake among 4- to 10-year-olds is on average only around 100 mg per day, mainly because fish is rarely on the menu. 

For comparison: one UltraPure Omega3 Kids capsule provides 115 mg of DHA and 30 mg of EPA, and two capsules provide 230 mg of DHA and 60 mg of EPA.

According to the EFSA, a guideline value of about 250 mg of EPA and DHA per day applies from the age of 2. For toddlers between 1 and 4 years of age who are not yet able to safely chew or swallow the solid capsule, it is recommended with UltraPure Omega3 Kids to mix the liquid contents of a pierced capsule with food or drink instead of giving the whole capsule.

For algae oil, the same target amounts of EPA and DHA apply in principle as for fish oil, i.e., usually around 250 mg daily for children aged 2 years and over. Algae oil is the plant-based alternative to fish oil and is particularly suitable for children with a fish allergy or for vegan/vegetarian families.

A deficiency is not manifested by a single, clear symptom, but rather by an overall inadequate supply over a longer period of time – this can best be assessed via the diet, for example, if fish is rarely or never on the menu. 

If you are unsure, a brief consultation with the paediatrician can provide clarity, and, if necessary, a laboratory diagnostic assessment can also be carried out.

There is no official, generally applicable recommendation for a special ADHD dosage, and omega-3 dietary supplements are not a substitute for medical treatment or therapy. 

There is research on whether an adequate supply of omega-3 is related to attention and behaviour, but this does not result in reliable, generally accepted dosage recommendations specifically for ADHD.
