Maca (Lepidium meyenii) is a tuberous plant from the high Andes of Peru. There, it grows at altitudes of over 4,000 metres. The maca root has been used as a food by the people in the region for centuries, similar to how we use potatoes or turnips. That is why it is also known as "Maca peruana".
The nickname comes primarily from the similar traditional significance. Botanically, the two plants have nothing to do with each other. Maca belongs to the cruciferous family and is therefore more closely related to radish and mustard than to ginseng.
Each capsule contains three maca extracts in equal parts: 167 mg of yellow maca, 167 mg of red maca and 167 mg of black maca, i.e., around 500 mg of maca extract in total. In addition, there are 2 mg of BioPerine®, an extract from black pepper containing 1.9 mg of piperine. The capsule shell is made of plant-based hydroxypropyl methylcellulose. There are no other additives.
All three are the same plant, Lepidium meyenii. They differ primarily in the colour of the root and in their profile of phytochemicals. Yellow maca is the most common variety and accounts for the majority of the harvest. Red maca and black maca are rarer. Maca Blend ProEliteX® combines all three varieties so that you don't have to choose just one.
This information shows how concentrated the maca extract is. Around 10 kg of dried maca root are processed to produce 1 kg of extract. A small capsule therefore contains significantly more root material than the 500 mg would suggest.
That depends entirely on what is more important to you. Maca powder is ground, dried root. It can be easily stirred into smoothies or muesli, but it has a distinctive, slightly malty-nutty flavour of its own. Maca capsules are tasteless, quick to take and always dosed the same way. They are also more practical when you are out and about. With Maca Blend ProEliteX®, one capsule per day is enough, and you don't have to weigh anything out.
Piperine is the substance that gives black pepper its spiciness. It is traditionally combined with plant extracts in dietary supplements. We use BioPerine®, a patented, standardised pepper extract containing at least 95% piperine. The amount per capsule is deliberately kept low (see next question).
The German Federal Institute for Risk Assessment (BfR) recommends that adults do not consume more than 2 mg of isolated piperine per day via food supplements. One capsule of Maca Blend ProEliteX® contains 1.9 mg and therefore remains within this recommendation.
