Due to the aging process or a deficiency of vitamins, minerals and trace elements, the collagen fibers of the connective tissue, which encase the hemorrhoids, become weak and flaccid. As a result, they lose their elasticity and blood builds up in the vessels, in a similar way to varicose veins filling up in the legs.
The enlargement of the hemorrhoids, and accompanying symptoms, can be exacerbated by other factors, such as constipation due to a low-fiber diet, or a lack of fluid intake, which requires more forceful pushing to defecate, a lack of exercise, sitting for too long, being overweight, or when the enlarging uterus presses on the veins during pregnancy.
Discomfort occurs when the hemorrhoids are permanently dilated, frequently even protruding from the anus. This leads to the typical symptoms, such as foreign body sensation, pain, burning, itching, stinging, oozing, irritation of the skin, and inflammation.
If the hemorrhoids are irritated, or even injured, during bowel movements, they may also bleed. In the worst cases, thromboses may form in the anus area due to compression or bruising caused by ruptured veins.
