Ashwagandha has been used in Indian medicine for 5000 years to promote vitality: for inner peace, strength and energy, vibrancy and performance, a healthy body and a young mind. Ashwagandha is also called "sleepberry" and is classified as an adaptogenic plant. 

The Federal Institute for Risk Assessment has examined numerous plants and herbal preparations and their intended uses. According to the institute, the sleepberry is used as an analgesic, antipyretic and antimalarial in traditional Chinese medicine and as a remedy with sedative, life-prolonging, rejuvenating and memory-enhancing properties in Ayurveda. [1] 

The long history of using ashwagandha indicates the safety and beneficial effects of preparations made from this plant. However, ashwagandha has also come into the focus of modern science and is currently receiving a lot of attention due to a number of recent studies.  

The ashwagandha root was clearly proven to contain 48 components. The components that are bioactive and thus particularly interesting for naturopathy are withanolides.

Particularly the premium ashwagandha root extract KSM-66® has been thoroughly investigated and tested in scientific studies.  

One of these studies suggests that KSM-66® ashwagandha root extract safely and effectively increases an individual's resistance to stress and, as a result, perceived quality of life. After 8 weeks, the KSM-66® group showed a 44% reduction in perceived stress. [3] 

In another study, it was found that after 8 weeks of taking KSM-66®, there was an overall improvement of 19.2% in the individual "happiness" score (Oxford Happiness Questionnaire). [4] 

And in a 2019 double-blind, placebo-controlled study of KSM-66®, subjects who received 300 mg of ashwagandha twice daily for 10 weeks required less time to fall asleep (on average, participants took 12.5 minutes less to fall asleep), slept longer (on average, participants slept 50 minutes longer), and experienced improved sleep quality. [7] 

Lemon balm extract 

Lemon balm (Melissa officinalis) belongs to the mint plant family. In nature, lemon balm is native to the warm south and southeast of Europe. When cultivated, it is also found in Central and Western Europe, as well as in Western Asia and the Mediterranean.  

The mild, delicately lemon-scented aroma makes lemon balm a popular and versatile herb. However, lemon balm is known not only as a popular ingredient in the kitchen, but also for its soothing properties.  

Lemon balm contains a compound known as rosmarinic acid, which is said to have strong antioxidant properties. According to a 2015 study, rosmarinic acid in lemon balm also increases the level and activity of a neurotransmitter gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) in the brain and improves sleep quality. [9] [10] 

Vitamin B6

Vitamin B6 plays an essential role in the nervous system. Generally, B vitamins are needed for the formation of neurotransmitters in the brain, which influence mood, energy and much more. So taking B vitamins can also improve stress management, which in turn has a positive effect on sleep.    

Vitamin B6 is especially important as it helps regulate hormone balance and affects mood and sleep by helping the body produce serotonin, melatonin and norepinephrine. Research suggests a link between evening vitamin B6 intake and prolonged REM sleep with more intense dreams and better dream recall. [11]

Are there any interactions with medication?

Individuals taking medication should always seek medical advice before using ashwagandha products.

Does ashwagandha have side effects?

In rare cases, ashwagandha may affect liver and thyroid function. Individuals with existing or previous liver conditions may be sensitive to ashwagandha. Pregnant women, nursing mothers, individuals with prostate cancer, and children under 18 should not take ashwagandha.
