The development of the Bärbel Drexel Ratanhia mouthwash is based on many years of naturopathic knowledge that flows into all of our products. The Ratanhia mouthwash cares and protects the gums. It refreshes the breath for a long time and maintains the natural balance of the oral flora. The composition of special ingredients makes the conditioner gentle, but effective. Below you will find useful information on the key components of this recipe.
Ratanhia root extract is made from the plant of the genus Krameria native to the Andes of Bolivia and Peru. The intense dark red color (Ratanhiarot) is typical for this extract and was even used in the past for dyeing textiles or red wine (port wine). The Ratanhia root contains many valuable tannins, especially catechins and neolignans. These have astringent (contracting) properties that have a positive effect on the gums and oral mucosa and support the healing process in the event of inflammation.
Birch sugar is also called xylitol, xylitol, diabetic sugar or wood sugar. It occurs naturally in many green plants. The term xylitol is derived from the Greek word xylon for wood (wooden part). In human metabolism, it occurs primarily as an intermediate in the breakdown of carbohydrates in the liver. Its sweetening power is comparable to that of sugar, but without having a harmful effect on the teeth.
The caries-reducing properties of birch sugar were discovered in the early 1970s. Between 1972 and 1975, two clinical studies were carried out at the University of Turku (Finland), which could show a significant reduction in caries. In addition, xylitol stimulates saliva production and promotes the formation of complexes with calcium and saliva proteins in the oral cavity. This leads to a remineralization of the teeth. Xylitol increases the pH in the oral cavity, which is a basic requirement for calcium retention in tooth enamel. Another Turku study from 2000 examined the interactions between mothers who regularly chewed gum containing xylitol and their children (up to 2 years old). One result of the study was that the regular consumption of xylitol chewing gum by mothers significantly inhibits Streptococcus mutans infestation in children.
Vegetable oils from cloves, sage, cinnamon and thyme have always been known for their strong antimicrobial properties. It is not for nothing that thyme is called the natural antibiotic. They help to bring the oral flora into a healthy balance.
Fennel, juniper, oranges and lemon oil give the mouthwash a fine flavor. The essential oils from spearmint, peppermint and eucalyptus are not only known for their antimicrobial properties, they also have an aromatic, fresh taste that improves bad breath.
The Ratanhia mouthwash helps to strengthen the gums and care for the oral mucosa. The special mixture of pure natural essential oils has an antibacterial and anti-inflammatory effect.
